Carolinas HealthCare System Behavioral Health
Holistic Care Concept in Practice
Filling a critical community need, Carolinas HealthCare’s new comprehensive behavioral health center provides nearly 70,000 sf of inpatient behavioral health services, along with an addition 8,800 sf for outpatient behavioral health care and therapy. To support the 66 inpatients, the facility provides large activity and living areas, as well as interior landscaped courtyards for secure outdoor recreation.
Working with users in a series of structured meetings, the design team utilized process mapping and computer simulation modeling to minimize travel distances and maximize operational efficiencies. Softening the institutional nature of the facility was the primary design driver, and the final design delivers a residential aesthetic to patients and staff, as well as members of the surrounding community. Equally important was promoting patient and staff safety, which impacted all facets of space planning, material specification, and furniture selection.
The use of Building Information Modeling (BIM) was critical to the success of the Integrated Project Delivery process, which is characterized by early involvement with the Construction Manager and key subcontractors.
“Carolinas HealthCare System was able to design a first-class campus for inpatients and outpatients. This campus will have programs that will be the model of innovative care for others to follow. We are creating something here that very few other healthcare systems are doing.”
