Allowing community need to drive building program.

A freestanding ED and outpatient center provides seamless access to care.

The hospital-owned freestanding emergency department/outpatient center serves two primary purposes: decompressing the overcrowded main hospital emergency department and defending existing market share against a competitor.

The new 50,000 sf facility is divided into two occupancy categories under one roof. The I-2 occupancy housing the emergency department is separated by a 2-hour smoke wall from the outpatient clinic under the Business occupancy side. Although separated by occupancy type and administratively with respect to reimbursement rates, provisions have been made for convenient access to several imaging modalities to both ED and MOB patients all within the same facility.

We sized the project according to local demographics, anticipated volumes, and operational processes at the departmental level. This information was also helpful in obtaining COPN approvals from the Virginia Department of Health as part of a grassroots community campaign.

The project team utilized on-site real-time BIM document modification during the user meetings and construction administration.

The outpatient portion of the project includes a primary care and rotating specialty clinic with 22 exam rooms plus echo and echo stress. Patients can participate in cardiac rehabilitaton and physical therapy programs in the onsite gym.

A large wellness program includes community education space, a large divisible conference room, a demonstration kitchen, a diabetes clinic, and massage areas.
