Shortly after FreemanWhite completed the design of a hybrid operating room for Englewood Health in 2011, the hospital launched its transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVR) program. In the following years, the increased demand for TAVR procedures necessitated the addition of a second hybrid OR.
FreemanWhite’s design for the new 1,300 sf OR required relocating the physicians’ locker rooms to open space near the existing hybrid OR. Our design team worked with Siemens for the imaging equipment, including the robotic ARTIS pheno, which can be unobtrusively moved into and out of the surgical area. This flexibility allows optimal patient access while providing the access the surgical and anesthesia teams need to make complex interventions easier.
Utilizing virtual reality during the design process allowed physicians to interact with the design-in-progress. This exercise provided valuable feedback and allowed the team the opportunity to finetune the design to meet physicians’ needs before construction began. Reducing changes during construction helped control the time and cost associated with redesign.
