The conversion of 480 semi-private rooms to 240 private rooms represents a major step toward a modern, efficient facility. In addition to increased size and improved aesthetics, the new patient rooms now feature bedside computer workstations and hand-washing stations for clinicians. Combined, these changes dramatically elevate these spaces for patients and staff.
From a staff perspective, the existing semi-private patient rooms presented serious challenges to HIPAA compliance and infection control. Staff had difficulty maneuvering patients and equipment around crowded rooms, particularly as bed size has increased. This arrangement created logistical problems for staff and compromised patient privacy. Patient bathrooms, severely undersized and not handicap-accessible, also made it difficult to provide bathing assistance to patients. The renovation increased bathroom size by 35% and achieved ADA compliance.
To manage the construction in active patient areas, FreemanWhite conducted a transition planning analysis using input from nurse managers. Our strategy involved completing upgrades to half of each wing at a time, creating a simplified approach to shifting patients and staff, and enabling the hospital to maintain high-level care while minimizing workflow adjustments. Challenged by the fifth floor’s location in the middle of the tower, phasing had to ensure that necessary work on water and sanitary lines did not impact functionality elsewhere in the building.
