Mount Pleasant Hospital

Mount Pleasant, South Carolina

Emergency services anchor new hospital.

Positioning for market share growth.

The new campus development for Mount Pleasant Hospital consists of a three-story, full service hospital and adjacent medical office building on a 78-acre site. The design utilizes a Low Country vernacular to reflect the deeply rooted rich fabric of the community through elements of scale, rich texture, and design features such as courtyards, verandas, and sun screening shutters.

Anchoring the Greenfield development, the emergency department is prominently located on a corner to allow ambulance and walk-in traffic to enter at right angles to the building and to locate key support areas close to all entry points. Additionally, since the new hospital is in a fast-growing area, this peripheral location offers the ability for rapid expansion from 12 to 20 treatment spaces without compromising critical relationships. The ED is adjacent to radiology for the convenience of in-department imaging and CT without duplicating expensive modalities. Surgery and ICU are just above on the second floor, connected by a dedicated elevator.

The hospital’s 85 private patient rooms provide a staff/caregiver zone near the door, a patient zone in the center of the room, and a family zone on the outside wall with a lounge chair and convertible sofa bed for overnight stays. The new Mount Pleasant Hospital contains two 32-bed medical surgical care units and a 10-bed critical care unit, along with a dedicated Women’s Center offering the latest technology in its labor and delivery suites. This section of the hospital encompasses seven labor/delivery rooms, 11 post-partum beds and a 12-bassinet nursery as well as two C-section ORs.

The medical office building is connected to the hospital physically and aesthetically so that it appears to be a natural continuation of the hospital, both internally and externally. With its proximity and ease of access to the hospital, the MOB provides an opportune location for such specialties as OB/GYN, surgery and pediatrics, among other specialties.
