With a focus on emerging trends of Freestanding ER’s, Haskell developed this 22,000 SF prototype based on the shared experiences of their most experienced healthcare designers. This facility embodies the lessons learned and proven successes of their combined portfolios. It is designed to confront today’s challenges faced by service providers, supporting a faster throughput and thus, better patient outcomes.
The building is designed to be easily expanded to allow for additional treatment rooms and waiting space; and as trends might dictate, it can be convertible to a micro hospital. This prototype supports an anticipated volume of up to 30,000 annual visits, consisting of eight treatment spaces, including 2 outfitted for patients exhibiting behavioral health needs, one Resuscitation room, one isolation room, one Bariatric room with integral patient lift and one Pelvic exam treatment room. The main entrance façade as well as the EMS canopy are clad with red metal panels to assist in having itself be easily and immediately recognized as an Emergency Room facility. Thanks to a clerestory above the exam/nursing core that is central to the floor plan and the ample glass areas at the main entrance vestibule and waiting room, natural light becomes a key component to the care and well-being of the staff and patients within. Finally, adjacent to the main entrance, an area has been set aside for a patio area so that the care givers and visitors can find respite.
A lot size site of 3.5 acres would comfortably provide for two entry points, a dedicated drop-off lane with a canopy supporting 3 vehicles, 60+ parking spaces and a loop road from which service vehicles can access a covered delivery area. There is also a portion of the site dedicated for an EMS drive aisle with integrated canopy and parking spaces for 8 emergency vehicles.
Although Atlanta was selected as its design site, neither the chosen exterior aesthetic nor the nuances of the interior arrangements are intended as a directive, but as a compelling pallet willing to adjust to the regional vernacular, market challenges and administrative ideals.
