On World Heart Day, FreemanWhite recognizes the steps that we as designers can take to help improve cardiovascular health for the patients who use our facilities. Providing patients with thermal and auditory comfort (through temperature and sound control), as well as introducing residential and hospitality amenities in the healthcare setting, we give them a supportive environment that lowers stress levels. These reduced stress levels can then be measured in a reduction in heart rate and blood pressure, which can protect individuals from strain on the cardiovascular system. #worldheartday #architecture #healthcaredesign #hearthealth
Get to know Seth Byrd, Design Associate! You star Get to know Seth Byrd, Design Associate! You started shortly before COVID and work from home hit. How was that for you as a new employee? Actually I started during work from home. My first day, I came into the office, was handed a laptop and told to go home. I was given what I needed in order to work from home, and everyone’s contact information, so it went okay. I was part of Phase 2 for back to the office, and am happy to be there. Coming into the office helps me stay more focused and productive, more so than working at home by yourself. What is it about project detailing that you like so much? I like the moment between design and the built product. Sometimes that happens at the same time and I find the clash interesting. I’m interested in understanding systems as a whole, and taking a design into something that can be built is fascinating to me. You are engaged. So when is the big day? March 6, 2021 – we just set the date. Rain or shine, social distancing or not – it is gonna happen and it is gonna be awesome! Right now is a weird time though to do life-changing things. We met at the beginning of college but did not start dating until our junior year. So we’ve been together for 2½ years. It’s great, we have the same interests as she is an architect as well. What do you like to do when you aren’t at work? As little as possible. I do love to be outdoors though. Going camping in a couple of weeks and looking forward to it. Tent camping is the best. Is there something you always wanted to try and haven’t? Not really, not one for jumping out of a perfectly good airplane. I would, however, love to go see the Grand Canyon. Bonus info: When I started architecture school, I thought I wanted to do residential architecture. There are only so many ways to design a 1,400 sf house, so that helped me change my mind about that. #architecture #healthcaredesign #camping #grandcanyon

What about your job gets you out of bed in the morning? What we do. We do healthcare. We build hospitals. It’s what’s needed. Our buildings enable healthcare providers to do what they do. If you could go anywhere at any time, where and when would it be? Ireland. As to when, as soon as possible. What’s the most difficult goal you have achieved in your career? For me, when I started my career in Architecture almost 30 years ago, I never would have pictured myself doing healthcare planning. Because everything I’ve learned about buildings was from people I worked for – I had done parks and rec, civic projects. When I lived in Virginia, I did McDonald’s. What’s something you wish you had more time for? More time or more space? Jewelry – I’m trying to convince my husband that we need a bigger house so I can have room to work and to leave my work out and not have to put it away while I’m in the middle of it.
